A feature of all F's was that the A units were not equipped
with steam generators, but the B units were so equipped.
One A unit on the roster was painted solid black at one point.
At some point in their lives on the NC, shop forces removed
most of the side skirting around the fuel tanks.
Even the F-3's were equipped with Farr grilles.
A "Diesel unit" on the NC was considered to be an
A-B lashup of 2 engines.
